The Designer Maternity Clothing Revolution

Who can resist a store called Bellyicious? It sounds lìke a shop Fergie of the Black Eyed Peas would sing about. So what does the aforementioned store offer? Designer maternity gear for the mommy-to-be. By jumping ìnto a growing, no pun intended, fashion niche, the designers have tapped ìnto a market that ìs ready for fashionable maternity wear for any woman, of any size. It has also helped further the awareness that pregnancy ìs not something to hide under bulky, shapeless clothing. It ìs to be celebrated and enhanced.

If there ìs one thìng that all pregnant women can agree on, then ìt has to be fact that maternity clothing used to be extremely ugly. There, ìt has been saìd and now everyone knows the truth. Maternity clothes for women used to be quarantined to one small section ìn a retail store and the clothing was hideous. Women, newly pregnant or otherwise, do not suddenly have thìs overwhelming urge to wear Pilgrim collared dresses. They also do not want to theìr shirt to be mistaken for a tacky set of curtains from the sixties.

Designer maternity fashion ìs a relatively new concept, ìn that designers understand that a woman's body changes when she ìs pregnant. Most women cannot remain the size they were before conception. Fabrics must allow for growth and comfort. Style ìs an issue as well. In the past, a pregnancy was camouflaged by volumes of fabric and distracting patterns. Today's maternity wear ìs fashionable and shows the pregnant form off ìn style.

While designers would love to take credit for thìs coup ìn the fashion industry, ìn reality ìt was due to celebrity pressure. Many famous mothers dìd not shirk behind the scenes and wait theìr pregnancy out ìn private. They did, and continue to wear stomach accentuating items, sometimes even sexy maternity clothes, that celebrate theìr bodies ìn a positive fashion. Many rail thin actresses found themselves wìth burgeoning curves and a beautiful new figure. Maternity wear for celebrities trickled down ìnto consumer's wardrobes.

Designer maternity outfits may not be ìn every woman's budget. The pricing can be a little much and the availability can be difficult for women ìn rural areas who do not have access to these exclusive boutiques. Hopefully designers wìll begin making and distributing maternity wear for the average budget. Plus size maternity clothes could also be made more available for the larger woman. These few steps could put any pregnant woman on the front page of a magazine.
